Before You Start

You need two things: the PS2 BIOS file (downloaded and extracted from its ZIP archive), and a supported emulator installed on your device. The steps below cover every major platform.

Extract the ZIP First

The BIOS must be extracted before use. Right-click the downloaded ZIP and choose "Extract All" (Windows), double-click (macOS), or use unzip (Linux). You should see a .bin file — that is your BIOS.

Installing on PCSX2 (Windows / macOS / Linux)

PCSX2 is the main PS2 emulator for desktop. These steps work for all PCSX2 versions including the Qt-based release.

  1. Open PCSX2. On first launch the Setup Wizard appears — click Next until you reach the BIOS page. If it is already installed, go to Settings → BIOS.
  2. Note the BIOS directory path shown in the settings panel. The default is Documents\PCSX2\BIOS on Windows or ~/Library/Application Support/PCSX2/bios on macOS.
  3. Open that folder in your file explorer. Copy your extracted .bin file (and any .mec or .nvm files) into it.
  4. Back in PCSX2, click Refresh List. Your BIOS file will appear with a green checkmark confirming it is valid.
  5. Select the BIOS version you want and click Finish or Apply. You are ready to load a game.

Recommended BIOS for PCSX2

For the widest USA game compatibility: SCPH-39001 (v1.60) or SCPH-70012 (v2.00). Match the BIOS region to your game region for best results.

Installing on AetherSX2 or ArmSX2 (Android)

  1. Transfer the extracted .bin file to your Android device. A dedicated folder such as Internal Storage/BIOS/PS2 is recommended.
  2. Open AetherSX2 or ArmSX2. On first launch the Quick Setup screen appears. Tap Select BIOS Directory.
  3. Navigate to the folder containing your BIOS file and tap Use This Folder. Grant storage permission when prompted.
  4. The app will scan and detect your BIOS automatically. A valid detection shows the BIOS name in the settings list.
  5. Return to the main screen and tap Add Game to locate your game ISO.

Installing on RetroArch (iOS, Android, Desktop)

  1. Install the PCSX2 core inside RetroArch via Online Updater → Core Downloader.
  2. Place the BIOS .bin file in the RetroArch BIOS folder: RetroArch/system/.
  3. Load content with the PCSX2 core. The BIOS is detected automatically from the system directory.

Verifying the Installation

After setup, test with a known-good game ISO. A successful boot shows the PS2 startup screen (the grey cube animation) before jumping into the game. If you see a black screen or error, check the section below.

Common Problems After Installation

BIOS Not Found / No BIOS Detected

The most common cause: the file is still inside the ZIP. Extract it fully, then copy the .bin to the correct folder and refresh the BIOS list in your emulator settings.

Black Screen After Loading

Region mismatch — you are loading a PAL game with an NTSC BIOS (or vice versa). Download the matching regional BIOS from the download table and switch to it in Settings.

BIOS File Appears But Shows as Invalid

The file may be corrupted or incomplete. Re-download the BIOS ZIP and extract again. Ensure no antivirus software quarantined the file during extraction.
