Error: "No BIOS File Found" or "BIOS Not Detected"
This is the most common PCSX2 error. It means the emulator cannot locate a valid .bin file in its BIOS directory.
- Open your file manager and navigate to
Documents\PCSX2\BIOS(Windows) or~/Library/Application Support/PCSX2/bios(macOS). - Confirm a
.binfile is present — not a ZIP file. If you see a ZIP, extract it first. - In PCSX2, go to Settings → BIOS and click Refresh. The BIOS should now appear with a green checkmark.
- If the folder is custom, ensure the path in PCSX2 settings points to the correct location.
Error: Black Screen After BIOS Loads
A black screen after the BIOS initialises usually means a region mismatch between your BIOS and game, or a corrupted game ISO.
Region Mismatch
Using a USA BIOS with a PAL game (or vice versa) commonly causes a black screen. Go to Settings → BIOS and switch to the matching regional BIOS. Check our BIOS selection guide if unsure.
Corrupted ISO
If the BIOS region is already correct, the game file itself may be corrupt. Verify the ISO file size matches known-good dumps. A fresh, complete copy of the game is required.
Error: BIOS Shows as Invalid or Greyed Out
If PCSX2 detects your file but flags it as invalid, the BIOS dump is incomplete or corrupted. A legitimate PS2 BIOS .bin file is exactly 4 MB (4,194,304 bytes).
- Right-click your
.binfile → Properties and check its size. - If it is less than 4 MB, the file is incomplete. Re-download the BIOS and extract again.
- Ensure your antivirus has not quarantined or truncated the file during extraction.
Error: Game Boots to PS2 Menu Instead of Game
This happens when PCSX2 runs in Full Boot mode and the BIOS region does not match the disc region. The PS2 BIOS rejects the disc as a foreign region.
- Switch PCSX2 to Fast Boot mode (Settings → Emulation → Fast Boot). This skips the region check.
- Alternatively, switch to the correct regional BIOS for your game.
Error: PCSX2 Crashes on Startup
A crash before the emulator window opens is almost never a BIOS issue. Common causes are outdated graphics drivers, missing Visual C++ Redistributables (Windows), or using a 32-bit PCSX2 on a 64-bit system. Update PCSX2 to the latest Qt release and update your GPU drivers.
