Understanding BIOS Versions
Sony released several hardware revisions of the PS2 between 2000 and 2013. Each revision shipped with a different BIOS chip, numbered by SCPH model. The BIOS version affects compatibility with a small number of titles — primarily very early or late releases.
USA Versions (NTSC-U)
- SCPH-39001 (v1.60) — mid-generation fat model. Best all-round compatibility for the US library. The community default.
- SCPH-70012 (v2.00) — slim line revision. Faster boot, slightly revised architecture. Also widely recommended.
Japan Versions (NTSC-J)
- SCPH-10000 (v1.00) — the original launch BIOS. Required for a handful of early Japanese exclusives.
- SCPH-18000 (v1.01) — added DVD playback. Better for mid-generation Japanese titles.
Europe Versions (PAL)
- SCPH-50003 (v1.70) — standard PAL fat model. Covers the core European library.
- SCPH-75004 (v2.00) — slim PAL. Better for later European releases.
Can I Use Multiple BIOS Files?
Yes. Both PCSX2 and AetherSX2 allow multiple BIOS files in the BIOS directory simultaneously. You switch between them in the emulator settings before loading region-specific games. The full pack download includes all regions so you only need to extract once.
Does the BIOS Version Affect Performance?
No. BIOS version has no impact on emulation speed. Frame rate, resolution, and performance are all determined by your hardware and emulator settings, not the BIOS version.
